Leuven - Louvain - Löwen

The beautiful small town of Leuven in Belgium is completely dominated by the catholic university in Leuven. In spite – or because of – their renowned faculty, the town is a drop-dead student party town with an old town market square surrounded by Belgian beer bars. No closing hours. Your brain is the limit.

Town hall of Leuven

Leuven's town hall displays Belgian architecture at its finest.

What to do

  • Take a walk to the Heverlee campus just south of the ring road. Residing in a beautiful park, the university uses a beautiful castle as a function hall and administration building. Clustered around it in respectful distance, the newer faculties and disciplines are located between alleys of old trees within the park.
  • Drinking – there will be more Belgian beer specialties that you can handle on just one visit!

Where to stay

  • Hotel Professor is affordable, in the middle of things, and within creeping distance of the aforementioned gastronomic district. In addition, their own cocktail menu is decent enough.

Getting around

The walk from the train station into the middle of town is approx. 15 minutes long. Get around as a pedestrian, on a borrowed bike, or by taxi. The train to Brussels takes approx. 30 minutes.

Where to eat

  • For a culinary highlight, which is not necessarily authentic Belgian cuisine, but definitely going to be remembered, you could order a Paella “demonstration dinner” at De Korier van Navarra. The owner, Ivo Hermans, who has been running the small restaurant for decades, will entertain the guests with Leuven’s Spanish episode in history, while at the same time preparing Paella in a large pan. The Paella cooking session actually turns into a lesson on the history of Paella, its ingredients, and the ways of treating the ingredients right. After well an half hour or culinary foreplay around the pan, the audience is released with full plates of delicious Paella. Call early for a reservation!

What to bring home

  • Belgian Beer.
  • Belgian Chocolate.
